Description
Renoir, Impressionist exhibition
Impressionism specializes in fleeting feelings. However, the works in this very exhibition, which turns the Frick’s mohair-upholstered East Gallery into a runway for Renoir’s soigné Parisians, don’t at first register as Impressionist.
With their classical portrait and their overwhelming scale, they seem at odds with the modest plein-air paintings that define the movement.
The masterpice here is “La Promenade” (1875-6) : stylish young woman walks wih two little girls in a garden
